Metallography
The metallography headed by Martina Hofmann offers the following services to the staff and students of the Faculties of Physics and Chemistry:
- Hot-embedding of samples which can withstand 180°C for a short period of time (approx. 3 minutes). This is done with a Struers CitoPress-1. Samples which are hot-embedded with a conductive embedding material are especially well-suited for scanning electron microscopy.
- Cold-embedding of delicate samples. The use of a conductive embedding material is an option.
- Grinding and polishing of samples with a semiautomatic system (Struers RotoPol-25)
Sample preparation time of the sample preparation service
Please take into account that the time needed for the sample preparation can be a few days to a few weeks — depending on how busy the service currently is. Delays are also possible in the holiday season. Please make sure that the sample preparation will be finished in time for e.g. a SEM session before you book the equipment for this date.
